a beautiful candid moment
This is one of my posts that talks about “why I love a particular wedding photo”, from my point of view as the photographer.
As a documentary wedding photographer, I love to capture authentic and spontaneous moments as they happen throughout the day. I spend a lot of time looking and anticipating special “moments.”
This shot was from a wonderful wedding at the beautiful Camden Town Hall with their famous marble staircase.
Marie and Brian’s wedding was intimate and very romantic. I love this photo because it captures that special moment just after the ceremony when they have their first moment together alone as a newly married couple. As the photographer I really treasure this moment - it’s so special and I get to witness it. I am very aware of letting the couple enjoy this moment and not barging in telling them where to stand or how to pose. I stand back and let them have this moment, and of course, take shots like this.
I also think it’s a good example of documentary wedding photography and why I love it. You couldn’t set something like that up, and feels much more meaningful than the obligatory family group shots. There’s certainly a place for those, but these kinds of candid moments are the most precious.
I tend to describe such photos as those I can almost "smell." They transport you back to the very moment, allowing you to feel the room's atmosphere and the energy that filled it. To me, this is what defines a great wedding photograph – the ability to inspire the laughter, the love, and the unique ambiance of that singular moment. As my couples go through their wedding album in the years to come, it’s these kinds of photos that will undoubtedly bring back memories of their wedding day and the authentic moments that made it truly special.
