a beautiful candid moment

This post is all about “why I love a particular wedding photo”, from my point of view as the photographer. As a documentary wedding photographer, I love to capture real and spontaneous moments as they happen. I spend a lot of time looking and anticipating special “moments” throughout the day.

This shot was from a beautiful muslim wedding at Linden House on the banks of the river Thames. I love this photo because it captures such an intimate, candid moment between the couple. This is the “first look” where they see each other for the first time in all their wedding finery. It’s all the more special because it’s a private moment for the couple together just before the ceremony. Private except for me and my camera, which means I keep my distance and let them have their moment. I don’t actually take too many photos in these moments - I get what I need and leave them to it. I love the look on the bride’s face and she waits to turn around and face her future husband.

I also think it’s a good example of documentary wedding photography and why I love it. You couldn’t set something like that up and for me, it’s much more meaningful than the obligatory family group shots. There’s a place for those, for sure, but for me, these kinds of candid moments are the most precious.

I often describe such photos as those I can almost "smell." They transport you back to the very moment, allowing you to feel the room's atmosphere and energy that filled it. To me, this is what really makes a great wedding photograph – the ability to inspire the laughter, the love, and the unique ambiance of that singular moment. As my couples flip through their wedding album in future years, it’s these kinds of photographs that will undoubtedly bring back memories of their wedding day and the authentic moments that made it truly wonderful.
