I've known Jeremy King since my days singing at Crazy Coqs, part of Picadilly's Zedel restaurant. He's hard to miss. Poised, charming and almost stately in manor, gliding around his restaurant greeting newcomers (who surely wondered who he was but sensed he must be someone) and regulars alike. It was only when I got to know him a little I realised his secret weapon. Kindness. He's a good man. He staff love him and that says a lot. So, it was no surprise when he welcomed me into his new home in Primrose Hill and agreed to pose for this At Home series.
He's a keen art lover and been painted by Freud (an old regular), David Bailey (I didn't know he painted), and Tom Phillips. You can see the Phillips hanging behind Jeremy seated on the couch - and the small study for it in the kitchen by the stunning Robert Longo Triptych.
He's received two Catey awards (the Oscar's of catering) and is the man behind London's brightest new restaurant Arlington. If you want to experience the warmth of the man himself, pop along for dinner. Chances are Jeremy will be there, taking care of business with his ever watchful eye.
at home - a long-term book project
This At Home series gives me access to the homes of people I admire and respect. I am deeply grateful for their trust in letting me into their private spaces to photograph them and capture a real insight into what makes them tick.
Unlike shooting weddings which can be quite hectic, these photo shoots usually give me time to get to know my subject and experiment with different locations and ideas. My background is in portraiture and street photography and I love trying to capture a person’s essence in a photograph. I am a curious person by nature and always want to know the real story, what a person is really like behind their public facade.
