Valentine’s Day isn’t just about grand romantic gestures or expensive gifts. At its heart, it’s a celebration of love—and love comes in many forms. Whether you’re engaged, married, single, or remembering someone special, this day can be a chance to appreciate the connections that truly matter.

As a wedding photographer, I see love in all its forms. On a wedding day I love the small, everyday moments—glances, laughter, and quiet support from parents, friends and beloved family members. Those are the things worth celebrating, not just once a year, but every day. So, here are six ways to make this Valentine’s Day special, whatever your relationship status.

1. Write a Letter (Not a Text!)

In a world of quick messages and emojis, a handwritten letter is a rare and meaningful gift. Write to your partner, a close friend, or even yourself—yes, really! Reflect on what you appreciate, what you’ve learned, and what you hope for. It’s a simple act that can mean a lot.

2. Plan an Unconventional Date

Skip the overpriced dinners and do something different. Watch the sunrise with a flask of coffee, take a cooking class together, or go on a long walk somewhere new. If you’re single, take yourself on a date—go to that exhibition you’ve been meaning to see, book a theatre ticket, or enjoy a meal somewhere special, just for you. Sam and I have just come back from a trip to Tenerife (sort of working) and we did some lovely things on a weekend - more than we'd ever do in London. There's something about being away that makes us more inclined to do fun things... or maybe we just have more time! Regardless, we are resolved to do more fun stuff in our own city.

3. Honour Those You’ve Loved

For those who have lost a partner or a loved one, Valentine’s Day can be difficult. It’s okay to acknowledge that. Light a candle, visit a place that holds special memories, or simply take time to reflect. Love doesn’t disappear, even when someone is no longer here.

4. Show Love In Small Ways

Love isn’t always about grand gestures. It’s in making someone a cup of tea, checking in on a friend, or spending quality time with a pet. If you have a dog, take them on an extra-long walk. If you love gardening, spend the day caring for your plants. Love is in the little things.

5. Print A Photo That Means Something

We take thousands of photos, but how many do we actually print? Find a photo that makes you feel something—a wedding day memory, a family picture, or even a moment of quiet joy—and print it. Stick it on your fridge, frame it, or send a copy to someone who’d appreciate it.

6. Capture Your Love Story

If you’re in a relationship, why not book a photoshoot together? You don’t need to be engaged or married to have beautiful photos that capture your connection. A relaxed couple’s shoot, perhaps in a favourite London spot, can be a wonderful experience. I always really enjoy these couple shoots - and my couples do too. It's such a fun thing to do! And if you’re single, why not celebrate yourself? A solo portrait session can be an empowering way to capture who you are right now. We can do it in the studio or talk a walk to a favourite spot.

Love Is Bigger Than One Day

Valentine’s Day can be what you make it—a moment to pause and appreciate love in all its forms. Whether you’re celebrating with a partner, a friend, a pet, or just yourself, make the day meaningful. And if you’d love some beautiful photographs to remember your connection—whether that’s with a partner, your family, or just you—I’d love to capture that for you. Happy Valentine’s Day. However you spend it, I hope it’s filled with love and peace.
