St Albans Register Office is a great place to get married and enjoy unique wedding photos. It’s a calm, well-run venue with just one ceremony room and it suits couples looking for something intimate and a little bit different.
As a photographer, I enjoy working in St Albans because it offers character without feeling overwhelming. The ceremony room is on the ground floor and has been furnished with bespoke pieces that reflect the building’s past, keeping the space warm and welcoming rather than formal. Just a short ride away is St Albans Abbey which itself is a wonderful building and great backdrop for photos, but the surrounding gardens are also a real treat.

I’m calm and unobtrusive, blending in more like a guest than a photographer, and I only step in when it’s genuinely helpful to offer a bit of gentle guidance. This is your wedding day, not a photoshoot — you’ll still get beautiful images, just without being constantly prompted. My priority is that you and your guests feel relaxed and present, and that when you look back at your photos, they bring the day flooding back just as it happened.

The Gatehouse Ceremony Room
The ceremony room at St Albans Register Office is located on the ground floor of The Gatehouse and has been carefully furnished to reflect the building’s historic character. It feels warm and welcoming, with bespoke furniture that suits the scale of the room and keeps ceremonies feeling personal.
Ceremonies here naturally feel close and relaxed. Guests are seated near the couple, which creates a shared, intimate atmosphere that works beautifully on the day. From a photography point of view, the room is easy to work in — the layout is straightforward, the light is gentle, and there’s no need to move far to capture what’s happening.
After the ceremony, it’s just a short step outside for confetti and group shots outside the main doors. The little garden at the front is a nice spot for photos of the couple before heading off to the reception.

CAN WE USE CONFETTI AFTER THE CEREMONY?
Human-made or artificial confetti isn’t allowed, including biodegradable confetti, cannons or smoke bombs. Bubbles, or fresh or dried flower petals in white or ivory, are permitted instead.
That said, I have seen couples use biodegradable paper confetti without issues, but it’s worth being aware of the official guidance and deciding what you’re comfortable with. In my confetti guide, I generally advise against dried petals — they don’t photograph especially well and they get everywhere. You’ll still be finding bits in your hair long after the photos are done.
WHO COUNTS TOWARDS THE ROOM CAPACITY?
Room capacity is fixed due to fire and safety regulations and can’t be exceeded. All guests must be seated. The couple, registrars, one photographer and very young children are usually not included, but it’s always best to confirm exact numbers when you book.
CAN WE BRING OUR DOG TO THE CEREMONY?
Yes, well-behaved dogs can often be included if this is arranged in advance. You’ll need to discuss this with the registration team when booking so permission can be confirmed ahead of the day.
CAN WE INCLUDE RELIGIOUS READINGS OR MUSIC IN THE CEREMONY?
No. Ceremonies at St Albans Register Office are civil ceremonies and must be completely non-religious. That means no religious readings, hymns or vows taken directly from religious services.
You can include personal readings, music and vows, as long as they’re secular.
WHAT TIME SHOULD WE ARRIVE FOR THE CEREMONY?
You’ll usually be asked to arrive around 30 minutes before your ceremony time. This allows for pre-ceremony checks and interviews with the registrars. If you’d prefer not to see each other beforehand, interviews can usually be done separately. Either way, arriving a little early helps the day feel calm and unhurried.
IS THERE PARKING AVAILABLE AT ST ALBANS REGISTER OFFICE?
There is limited parking to the rear of the building, available only for the duration of your appointment. Parking is managed by a private company and enforced, so make sure you park in the correct bays and register your vehicle details when you arrive.
HOW LONG DOES THE CEREMONY LAST?
Most ceremonies last around 20 minutes. Afterwards, there’s usually time for a few photos inside and outside the building before guests move on, which works well for relaxed, natural photography.
DO WE NEED TO BRING OUR OWN WITNESSES?
Yes. It’s a legal requirement to bring two adult witnesses who can understand the ceremony. The registration staff can’t act as witnesses. If you’re having a very small wedding, I can step in as a witness if needed.

The Hub On Verulam

It works particularly well for private hire, with flexible spaces that suit both daytime receptions and evening parties. The atmosphere is relaxed, the food is crowd-pleasing (they specialise in amazing grazing tables), and it’s an easy place for guests to settle into after the ceremony. Once you're there you can enjoy the rest of your celebrations under one roof. They have a large garden which is great for drinks in the summer, a space for dancing, cake cutting and a gem of a private room upstairs where the couple of escape for a bit of peace and quite when they need it.
Verdi’s Italian Kitchen
Verdi’s is a popular choice for couples who want something warm, welcoming and unfussy. It’s ideal for a wedding breakfast with family and friends, especially if you’re planning a long, sociable lunch rather than a formal reception. Italian food always works well for mixed groups, and the setting feels celebratory without being stiff. A big plus is that it is a very short walk from the Registry Office and right next to Clarence Park which is a great spot for photos.
