Wedding Photography At Islington Town Hall – What You Need To Know

I have photographed more weddings in Islington Town Hall than anywhere else and as one of London's most famous wedding venues it offers a great blend of historic character and modern convenience. It's super well connected and feels central without being overwhelming, and it works particularly well for relaxed London ceremonies. The Town Hall is right on Upper Street which is packed with restaurants and bars so you'll have lots of options for photos of your wedding reception after the ceremony. I love it, but I'm biased – I’ve lived here for over 20 years and I got married there myself!

What It’s Like To Get Married In Islington?

Islington Town Hall is one of the most popular choices for North London and it’s easy to see why. I can sum it up in two words: grandeur and convenience. The building feels grand without being intimidating – there’s a real sense of history and occasion – and it’s incredibly easy for you and your guests, with excellent transport links and plenty of places to eat and drink after the ceremony, all within walking distance.

I live just a ten-minute walk away and, as you can imagine, I photograph here a lot. Over the years, I’ve learned the flow of the building and found some of the quieter corners that work beautifully for photos.

My Style of Photography

My whole approach to wedding photography is summed up in one line: beautiful photos for people who don’t like to pose. I focus on real moments as they happen rather than staging or directing them, so you can enjoy your day fully — the people, the atmosphere, the small in-between moments — while I quietly observe and capture it all in a natural, honest way, with no awkward posing or constant interruption.

I’m calm and unobtrusive, blending in more like a guest than a photographer, and I only step in when it’s genuinely helpful to offer a bit of gentle guidance. This is your wedding day, not a photoshoot — you’ll still get beautiful images, but without being told what to do every five minutes. My priority is that you and your guests feel relaxed and present, and that when you look back at your photos, they bring the whole day with all its warmth, happiness and joy.

Gary knows Islington Town Hall inside out – staff, spaces, hidden corners – which meant we were whisked into all the best spots and had everything running seamlessly. Gary is exceptionally talented, fun, personable, and professional in equal measure. The photos speak for themselves, as they're natural, joyful, and full of life. He was the perfect photographer for our wedding, and we can’t recommend him highly enough!

The Ceremony Rooms At Islington Town Hall

One of the strengths of Islington is the range of rooms available. Whether you’re planning something very small and low-key or celebrating big with all your family and friends, there’s a room that suits the scale and feel of your day. Let's explore those now.

Angel And Canonbury Suites

The Angel and Canonbury Suites are the smallest rooms at Islington Town Hall and are ideal for very intimate celebrations. There is just enough room for you and your witnesses, the decor is lovely and some of my favourite Islington Town Hall weddings have taken place here.

Capacity: These rooms are designed for the couple and two witnesses only, with no additional guests. If you’d like photographs during the ceremony, I can act as one of the witnesses — something I’ve done many times at Islington Town Hall.

Style: Both suites are beautifully finished and feel modern without being clinical.

Availability: Usually available on weekdays and work especially well for couples who want something simple at Islington Town Hall.

Elegant vanity tray with gold mirror, glass reed diffuser, and decorative jar on marble surface with teal wall.
Elegant waiting room with pink velvet sofa and chairs, teal wainscoting, herringbone parquet floor, and gold vanity desk.

Room 99

Room 99 is one of the most popular rooms at Islington Town Hall, and it’s easy to see why. Its size is a big part of the appeal and I love photographing ceremonies here. With space for up to 20 guests, it’s ideal for intimate Islington weddings where everyone feels involved without the room ever feeling empty. The décor is another reason couples choose it. The space feels modern while still clearly belonging to the wider Islington Town Hall building, which gives the ceremony a strong sense of place without overpowering the moment. There’s enough of an aisle between the rows of chairs to give you something to walk down too, which is especially nice if one of you is being given away. I have a separate page all about Room 99 here.

Capacity: Can accommodate up 20 guests but feels nice and full with less.

Style: It's bright, modern, mid-century feel—grey and white tones, parquet flooring, oak mantelpiece, large windows, Italian chandeliers

Pet-friendly: Yes

The Mayor’s Parlour

The Mayor’s Parlour offers a more traditional setting for Islington and it’s ideal when couples want something classic and contained.

Capacity: 4 guests (excluding couple, registrar, photographer)

Style: Intimate oak-paneled room with red leather seating, stained glass, and central fireplace. Historically used as the mayor’s official space

Availability: Fridays/Saturdays only

Pet friendly: No.

The Richmond Suite

The Richmond Suite is one of the larger rooms at Islington Town Hall and has a more traditional layout than some of the other spaces. There’s plenty of space to move around, lots of natural light and a natural aisle between the chairs. It reflects the hall’s 1920s design and feels closely connected to the building’s history without feeling formal or stuffy. I like it because there is nice light from the big windows and plenty of room for everyone to feel comfortable.

Capacity: 60 guests.

Style: Oak panelling, high decorative ceilings and an ornate fireplace, often styled with dried flower displays. The overall feel is classic and elegant..

Availability: Usually only Saturdays.

Pets: Yes

The Council Chamber

The Council Chamber is the largest room at Islington Town Hall and is located at the top of the grand marble staircase. As your photographer I enjoy working in here because there is plenty of space for me to move about and often really lovely light.

Capacity: Up to 85 guests on Saturdays and Sundays. From Tuesday to Friday, the limit is 50 guests (excluding the couple, registrars and me, the photographer).

Style: The room features a vaulted ceiling, stained-glass windows, a deep red carpet, and ornate wood panelling. The curved horseshoe layout means guests are seated relatively close, even when numbers are lower. This gives the room an intimate feeling even though it's quite big.

Ceremony length: Things here can be tailored with your own vows, music and readings. You can also request separate entrances and interviews. A simple ceremony takes around 20 minutes, while a fully personalised one may last up to 40 minutes.

Availability: Every day except Monday.

Pets: Yes

Reserve The Whole Of Islington Town Hall For Your Wedding

If you’d like Islington Town Hall entirely to yourselves, it’s possible to hire the whole building exclusively for your wedding on Sundays and bank holidays. This gives you private use of the venue, with no other ceremonies taking place for one hour before and two hours after yours.

The Statutory Room

The Statutory Room at Islington Town Hall is a functional space designed for simple, no-frills ceremonies. Things here are brief and move quickly, which works well if you’re planning to celebrate elsewhere as part of a wider Islington wedding day.

Capacity: Couple + 2 witnesses (no additional guests).

Style: Plain, minimal setup for basic legal formalities.

Eligibility: For Islington or City of London residents only.

Ante Rooms

The ante rooms at Islington Town Hall are supporting spaces used before and after the ceremony to gather, prepare, store bags or just take a moment.

Gary is fantastic in more ways than one! I would highly recommend working with him. He photographed our Islington wedding and not only are the photos more perfect than I could have imagined, but his kindness and humour throughout the day and ease with our families was much appreciated. Everyone loved having him there. Thank you, Gary!

Islington Town Hall FAQs

CAN WE HAVE RELIGIOUS READINGS OR MUSIC IN OUR CEREMONY?

Civil ceremonies at Islington Town Hall must be non-religious. This means you can’t include religious wording, readings from the Bible or other sacred texts, hymns, or vows taken directly from traditional church ceremonies.

CAN WE BE INTERVIEWED SEPARATELY AND SEE EACH OTHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE CEREMONY ROOM?

If you’ve booked a fully personalised wedding ceremony at Islington Town Hall, such as in the Council Chamber or Richmond Suite, you can usually be interviewed separately and enter the room independently for a first look. This isn’t available for statutory or simple ceremonies, where the format is fixed.

DO YOU DO FAMILY GROUP SHOTS?

Yes, of course. I always ask my couples to make is list of around 6 different groups they would like photographed, maximum 10. Time is limited at all town halls and there will be another wedding hot on our heels so we need to be very organised with these shots. It's worth pointing out that when it's sunny around midday the light on the steps of the town hall isn't very flattering and sometimes I might move everyone to the side where the light is better.

DO WE NEED TO BRING OUR OWN WITNESSES?

Yes. It’s a legal requirement to bring two adult witnesses to your wedding ceremony at Islington. If you’re getting married in one of the smaller rooms I am happy to act as a witness.

CAN WE USE CONFETTI?

Confetti is allowed on the outside steps of Islington Town Hall only. Rice isn’t permitted, and biodegradable confetti is recommended.

CAN WE BRING PETS TO THE CEREMONY?

Most ceremony rooms at Islington Town Hall are pet friendly. If bringing a pet is important to you, it’s worth confirming the current arrangements when you book your Islington Town Hall wedding.

CAN WE WALK DOWN THE AISLE?

Some ceremony rooms at Islington Town Hall have enough space to allow a short aisle entrance. This can work well if you’d like a wedding party to enter first or if one of you is being given away. The Richmond Suite has the longest and clearest aisle, followed by the Council Chamber.

Islington Wedding Reception Venues

Stepping out of Islington Town Hall, you’re immediately onto Upper Street, which is one of the reasons Islington works so well for a wedding day. Within a short walk, there are plenty of restaurants, bars and cafés to suit everything from a relaxed lunch to a lively evening celebration.

I often suggest meeting beforehand at The Vineyard, which sits directly opposite Islington Town Hall. It’s usually quiet during the day and works well for pre-ceremony photos. Many couples enjoy the short walk to Bellanger on Islington Green. Also close by is Bubba Oasis - a fun venue with lots of space and a private roof terrace - great for summer parties. A little further on, Frederick’s is an Islington institution and great option for larger wedding groups, with a garden, terrace, space for drinks and two private dining rooms. For a traditional pub vibe I can personally recommend The Draper's Arms. They are famous for their roasts and have a great private dining space upstairs. Canonbury Tavern is another favourite, with a private room upstairs (The Spender Room) that’s ideal for a small to medium-sized party (some photos of that below). Also in Canonbury, close to Highbury and Islington tube is Trullo - is a really special place and one of my favourite venues with a large private room downstairs. Heading in the other direction towards Essex Road you'll find The Hanbury pub which has a very handy section, on the left side as you enter, ideal for about 30 people. It's a good space which is private while still being open to enjoy the pub atmosphere.

Heading to the other side of Islington towards Exmouth Market brings you to Coin Laundry, which works particularly well for relaxed wedding receptions.

Transportation: Getting To Islington Town Hall

Islington is very well-connected making it accessible for you and your guests. The Town Hall is about half way down Upper Street between Highbury & Islington tube and Angel tube. Both are about 10-15 minute walk away. Several bus routes stop right outside the Town Hall. If you're arriving in a special wedding car, arrangements can be made for drop-off and pick-up at the front of the Town Hall.

"Having Gary as part of our day in Islington was an absolute pleasure. From the very first conversation, his attentiveness and deep knowledge of London weddings gave us complete confidence. When we were looking through the album we were blown away at the quality of the images and the moments that Gary had managed to capture, there were lots of moments where we didn’t even realise he was there. He wasn’t just a photographer; he felt like a guest and a wedding coordinator at times, keeping everything and everyone on track. We couldn’t have asked for more and would not hesitate to recommend Gary to anyone looking for a talented, friendly, and professional photographer."

Local Wedding Dresses And Florists

If you want to keep it really local supporting local Islington businesses can add a personal touch to your wedding. For bridal attire, Angelica Bridal in Camden Passage (my favourite street), near Angel tube , offers a range of beautiful dresses. Very close to the Town Hall you have the fabulous tailor Charlie Allen.

Upper Street boasts several florists: Angel Flowers and Plants, located at 60 Upper Street, and Dansk Flowers, situated at St Mary's Church on Upper Street, are both reputable choices.

Need More Local Knowledge?

Planning your wedding in Islington combines the charm of historic venues with the convenience of modern amenities, ensuring a memorable day for you and your guests. I've lived just down the road from the Town Hall for 20 years so if you need any more local knowledge, please just let me know.

"We picked Gary to photograph our London wedding and we couldn't have picked a better guy for the job. His enthusiasm and professionalism throughout the day were impeccable and brought joy and laughter to the day. We wanted photos that were natural and not forced and Gary managed to capture that in every single shot. We could not recommend Gary more."

"We can't recommend Gary enough! Not only did he capture our wedding day beautifully (seriously, the photos look like they came straight out of a magazine!), but he was also incredibly helpful during the planning process. Even though we're not exactly models, he made us feel completely at ease in front of the camera and knew exactly how to get the best shots. Thank you for everything, Gary!"

Islington Town Hall, Upper Street And The Character Of The Area

Islington Town Hall is located on Upper Street, one of the main streets running through Islington and a long-established part of the area. Upper Street developed as London expanded north, and Islington Town Hall became a key civic building serving the local community. Today,

Upper Street is one of the reasons Islington works so well for a wedding. Restaurants, bars, and reception venues are all within a short walk of Islington Town Hall, making it easy for guests to move from the ceremony straight into celebrations.

Just off Upper Street, Camden Passage offers a quieter setting and is often used by couples getting married at Islington Town Hall for drinks or wedding receptions. Together, the Town Hall, Upper Street, and surrounding streets give Islington weddings a strong sense of place while remaining practical and easy for guests.
