Wedding Photography At Old Marylebone Town Hall – What You Need To Know

Old Marylebone Town Hall is one of London’s most iconic places to get married and a wonderful setting for wedding photography. Set on Marylebone Road, it feels grand and unmistakably ceremonial, yet on a wedding day it’s surprisingly easy and relaxed. The building itself is a real standout, offering a striking backdrop for wedding photos and a strong sense of history that comes through naturally in the images.

The location is also a big part of the appeal. Central without feeling hectic, it’s well connected and surrounded by some of London’s most elegant streets. That makes it easy to move from ceremony to reception and gives wedding photographs a very distinct London feel. It suits couples who want their wedding to feel special and timeless, without tipping into anything overly formal.

What's It Like To Get Married At Old Marylebone Town Hall?

Getting married at Old Marylebone Town Hall feels properly ceremonial without being intimidating. The building was designed to mark important life events, and that sense of occasion is still very present on a wedding day. It looks impressive in photos and from the moment you arrive, there’s a clear flow to how things work, which helps everything feel calm and well organised.

Despite its grandeur, weddings here don’t feel stiff or overly formal. The registrars are experienced and friendly, guests are easy to manage within the space, and the layout makes it simple to move from the ceremony into time together afterwards. From my point of view as your wedding photographer, Old Marylebone Town Hall is one of the best-run town halls in London. It can get busy on a Saturday, but the staff are experts at keeping things moving while still making sure every couple gets their moment on the steps for those iconic wedding photos. You might notice quite a few black and white photos on this page - that's because as a photographer I always feel Old Marylebone Town Hall has that classic, timeless feel that just somehow looks good in monochrome.

My Style Of Photography

My whole approach to wedding photography is summed up in one line: beautiful photos for people who don’t like to pose. I focus on real moments as they naturally happen rather than staging or directing them, so you can enjoy your day fully — the people, the atmosphere, the small in-between moments — while I quietly observe and capture it all in a natural, honest way, without awkward posing or constant interruption.

I’m calm and unobtrusive, blending in more like a guest than a photographer, and I only step in when it’s genuinely helpful to offer a bit of gentle guidance. This is your wedding day, not a photoshoot — you’ll still get beautiful images, just without being constantly directed. My priority is that you and your guests feel relaxed and present, and that when you look back at your photos, they take you right back to the atmosphere and emotion of the day.

Gary was an excellent person to work with for our wedding, from the initial call right up until he sent over the final photos. He's incredibly organised and straightforward in his approach while also allowing you to feel at ease. Everyone at our small wedding complimented his work and personality! My husband and I really enjoyed his photography style and approach during one-on-one shots, and I barely knew he was there at the reception afterwards (in a good way!), which was exactly what we wanted. He was also very quick to send over the final pics which we are in awe over. We couldn't recommend him enough.

The Ceremony Rooms

One of the strengths of getting married at Old Marylebone Town Hall is the range of ceremony rooms available. Whether you’re planning something very small and simple or a larger ceremony with guests, there’s a space that suits both the scale and the feel of your wedding. Each room has its own character, but all share the same sense of history and occasion that Old Marylebone Town Hall is known for and they do look lovely in the photographs.

I'm going to give you an overview of the main ceremony rooms, along with what each one is best suited for and how they work on a wedding day.

The Westminster Room

The Westminster Room is the most popular ceremony space at Old Marylebone Town Hall and it’s easy to understand why. It's great for photography and strikes a really good balance between feeling grand and still being approachable, which suits a wide range of weddings. The room has a classic, elegant feel without being overly formal, and it works equally well for small, intimate ceremonies and slightly larger gatherings.

From a wedding photographer’s point of view, the Westminster Room is a pleasure to work in. The proportions of the room are good, the light is consistent, and there’s enough space to move around discreetly during the ceremony. There’s also enough of a central aisle to allow for a short walk in, which works well if one of you is being “given away” or if you’d like a more traditional entrance.

Capacity: Up to approximately 100 guests, depending on layout

Style: Elegant, traditional, with a strong sense of occasion

Aisle: Yes – enough space for a short aisle entrance

Pet-friendly: Yes

The Knightsbridge Room

The Knightsbridge Room is a popular choice for smaller weddings that still want a sense of occasion. It's more intimate than the Westminster Room but still very much like a traditional town hall ceremony space. It’s well suited to couples inviting close family and friends without needing a large room.

As a photographer, this room works nicely for capturing expressions and reactions, as everyone is closer together. The atmosphere tends to feel calm and personal, which translates well into natural, relaxed wedding photos.

Capacity: Up to around 30 guests

Style: Traditional, warm, and intimate

Aisle: Limited

Pet-friendly: Yes

The Mayfair Room

I love the Mayfair Room for wedding photography. It sits somewhere between the Knightsbridge Room and the Westminster Room in terms of scale. It’s often chosen by couples who want a classic ceremony setting but with a more manageable guest list. The room feels balanced and formal without being overwhelming.

From a wedding photographer’s point of view, the Mayfair Room is easy to work in. The proportions are good, guests are well positioned, and it’s straightforward to move around quietly during the ceremony to capture moments without disruption. There isn't really an aisle to walk down here as you enter the room close to the ceremony space with the guests facing you.

Capacity: Up to around 30 guests

Style: Elegant, traditional, and understated

Aisle: No

Pet-friendly: Yes

The Paddington Room

The Paddington Room is the smallest ceremony space at Old Marylebone Town Hall and is designed for very intimate ceremonies. It may be small but it's a real gem - beautifully decorated and perfect for photographs.

Capacity: 8 guests

Style: Relaxed, elegant, and low-key

Aisle: No

Pet-friendly: Check

The Soho Room

The Soho Room is another option for small, intimate weddings at Old Marylebone Town Hall. It has its own character and is a good choice for couples who want a private ceremony with a handful of guests.

As a wedding photographer, I find the Soho Room get top marks for those intimate moments. The smaller space keeps everyone engaged with the ceremony and helps the photographs feel personal and unobtrusive. With two large sofas, it's relaxed and comfy too!

Capacity: Up to around 13 guests

Style: Stylish, intimate, and relaxed

Aisle: No

Pet-friendly: Yes

The Marylebone Room

The Marylebone Room is designed for small, intimate weddings at Old Marylebone Town Hall and is ideal if you’re planning a quiet ceremony with just a handful of guests. With space for up to 12 people, it suits couples who want something personal and contained, without the fuss of a larger room.

From a wedding photographer’s point of view, the Marylebone Room's walnut-panelled interiors give it warmth and depth, while the modern fixtures and velvet upholstery add a contemporary edge. The result is a space that feels calm and elegant, and one that photographs beautifully without needing any staging or decoration.

Capacity: Up to 12 guests

Style: Classic-meets-contemporary, with walnut panelling, modern fittings and velvet upholstery

Aisle: No formal aisle

Pet-friendly: Yes

Pimlico Room

The Pimlico Room

The Pimlico Room is a stylish option for smaller weddings at Old Marylebone Town Hall and suits couples who want something intimate but visually distinctive. With space for around 20 guests it a good choice for close family and friends.

From a wedding photographer’s point of view, this room has a lot going for it. The muted sage tones, gold accents and parquet flooring give it a warm, elegant feel, and the wrap-around seating keeps everyone close to the ceremony. The fireplace is a natural backdrop for photos as the couple exchanges rings.

Gary was great to work with — both in the lead up to the day and the day itself he was professional and reassuring. We wanted an understated, elegant style that made both ourselves and our guests feel at ease — he definitely delivered on all fronts. The photos were spectacular - he turned them around very rapidly and with beautiful results! We'd definitely recommend him to anyone planning a wedding.

Old Marylebone Town Hall FAQs

WHAT TIME SHOULD WE ARRIVE FOR OUR CEREMONY?

You’ll usually be asked to arrive at Old Marylebone Town Hall around 30 minutes before your scheduled ceremony time. This gives you time for the registrar interviews and also allows things to run calmly, which really helps from a photography point of view.

If you’d prefer not to see each other beforehand, one of you can arrive around 30 minutes early and the other about 15 minutes before the ceremony so the interviews can be done separately. This needs a bit of quiet coordination, but I can help manage that on the day.

Guests can arrive up to 30 minutes before the ceremony. They’ll be shown into the ceremony room shortly before things begin, which keeps arrivals tidy and makes the start of the ceremony easier to photograph.

CAN WE BRING PETS TO THE CEREMONY?

Yes, Old Marylebone Town Hall is pet friendly for wedding ceremonies, depending on the room you choose. Well-behaved pets, usually dogs, are welcome in most ceremony rooms, though they aren’t permitted in the Paddington Room.

CAN WE WALK “DOWN THE AISLE”?

Yes, in some ceremony rooms. The Westminster Room has a clearly defined aisle and works well for a more traditional entrance or if one of you is being given away. In the smaller rooms there isn’t a formal aisle, but ceremonies tend to feel more intimate, which often leads to more natural, close-up photographs.

CAN WE HAVE RELIGIOUS READINGS OR MUSIC IN OUR CEREMONY?

If you’re having a civil ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall, it must be completely non-religious. This means no religious wording, readings from the Bible or other sacred texts, hymns, or vows taken directly from traditional church ceremonies at Old Marylebone Town Hall.

CAN WE BE INTERVIEWED SEPARATELY?

Yes, you can usually request separate interviews at Old Marylebone Town Hall. This allows you to arrive and enter the ceremony room separately, which works well if you’re planning a first-look moment as the ceremony begins. This option isn’t available for all ceremony types, so it’s best to confirm when you book. It also photographs beautifully when done well.

DO WE NEED TO BRING OUR OWN WITNESSES?

Yes. It’s a legal requirement to bring two adult witnesses, and it’s your responsibility to make sure they attend. If you’re having a very small wedding, I can step in as one of your witnesses while still photographing the ceremony. The registration team can’t act as witnesses for you.

CAN WE USE CONFETTI?

Yes, confetti is allowed outside Old Marylebone Town Hall only. It must be biodegradable, and confetti isn’t permitted inside the building. You can read more confetti tips here.

Gary was absolutely wonderful. He helped us through the process before the wedding and gave us excellent advice. On the day, he was just great. He took photos from the moment he arrived and gently guided everyone to the right places for the ‘posed’ photos. All the photos were great but his candid shots of us and our guests as we were chatting or when people were listening to the speeches were extra special. He really caught the energy and fun of our wedding - which was exactly what we wanted. All our guests commented on how good he was. You won’t regret hiring Gary - he’s a fabulous photographer.

A favourite spot for couples is The Landmark London, just around the corner. It’s perfect for a quiet drink before or after the ceremony, with its grand Winter Garden and relaxed bar. Marylebone - A Bit Of History

Old Marylebone Town Hall sits on Marylebone Road, in an area that was once a village outside London before being gradually absorbed as the city expanded westwards. The name Marylebone is thought to come from St Mary by the bourne, referring to a church near a small stream that once ran through the area. Over time, Marylebone developed a reputation for elegance and discretion rather than spectacle, a character that still defines the neighbourhood today.

Old Marylebone Town Hall itself was completed in 1920 and quickly became known as a place where significant personal milestones were marked. Over the years it has hosted countless ceremonies, famously Paul McCartney married Linda Eastman here in 1969, followed shortly afterwards by Ringo Starr and Maureen Cox. More recently, Liam Gallagher and Patsy Kensit were also married here. These high-profile weddings helped cement the Town Hall’s reputation as a place where private ceremonies and public attention often quietly overlap.

From a wedding photographer’s point of view, this history adds another layer to the experience. Couples getting married today are stepping into a building that has witnessed generations of London life, from everyday civil ceremonies to moments that later became part of popular culture. The grandeur of the architecture, combined with the calm, ordered streets of Marylebone outside, gives wedding photography here a timeless quality that doesn’t rely on trends or staging.

For couples choosing Old Marylebone Town Hall, the appeal often lies in that continuity — a wedding that takes place in a building rich with stories, set within a neighbourhood that has evolved gently rather than dramatically, and surrounded by a sense of London history that still feels relevant today.

We couldn’t be happier with our experience with Gary Williams as our wedding photographer. From the very beginning, Gary was incredibly attentive, taking the time to listen to what was truly important to us. He guided us through the process in advance, helping us feel prepared and at ease. On the day itself, Gary absolutely delivered. He captured the moments perfectly—every meaningful detail and emotion were reflected in the photos. What stood out most was how seamlessly he became part of our wedding party. Neither of us particularly enjoys being in front of the camera, but Gary made the entire experience feel natural, relaxed, and even fun. His energy was infectious, and he brought a wonderful vibe that resonated not only with us but with our family and guests as well. We’re so grateful for his presence and for the beautiful memories he’s preserved for us. We are obsessed with our pictures and reels. Highly recommended!
