Wedding Photography At Morden Hall – What You Need To Know

If you're looking for beautiful photos for your wedding day, Modern Hall is a really special place to get married. It has everything in one venue – a beautiful ceremony room, a large dining space, a separate drinks reception area and stunning grounds outside. The white bridge over the stream is a favourite spot for many couples, and it’s perfect for natural photography.

Not To Be Confused With Morden Park House

It’s worth noting that Morden Hall is a completely separate venue from Morden Park House, which is nearby. Both are lovely venues, but they offer very different experiences. Morden Hall has more of a countryside, National Trust feel, whereas Morden Park House is more formal and civic. Making that distinction clear for guests is always a good idea when planning your wedding here.

What It's Like Getting Married At Morden Hall

The appeal of Morden Hall lies in how naturally everything fits together. The historic buildings, open lawns, riverside paths and old trees create a setting that lends itself perfectly to unposed, documentary-style photography. Weddings here tend to feel calm and unrushed, and that sense of ease really comes through in the photographs.

My Style Of Photography

My whole approach to wedding photography is summed up in one line: beautiful photos for people who don’t like to pose. I focus on real moments as they happen, rather than staging or directing them, so you can enjoy your day fully — the people, the atmosphere, the small in-between moments — while I quietly observe and capture it all in a natural, honest way, without awkward posing or constant interruption.

I’m calm and unobtrusive, blending in more like a guest than a photographer, and I only step in when it’s genuinely helpful to offer a bit of gentle guidance. This is your wedding day, not a photoshoot — you’ll still get beautiful images, just without being directed throughout the day. My priority is that you and your guests feel relaxed and present, and that when you look back at your photos, they take you right back to the joy and atmosphere of it all.

It was an amazing experience with Gary. My husband and I often don't have couple photos because we are very awkward lol, but wow Gary did wonders! We are very thankful. Thank you again Gary. We would highly recommend Gary to grace your special occasions and take wonderful, amazing photos.

Wedding Spaces At Morden Hall

One of the biggest differences between Morden Hall and a town hall is that the entire house and gardens are exclusively yours for the day. There are no other weddings taking place, no shared corridors, and no sense of being moved along. Your guests are free to enjoy the house, gardens and different rooms as the day unfolds, which gives everything a relaxed, house-party feel rather than a formal schedule.

Morden Hall has been designed so each part of the day has its own natural home — from getting ready, to the ceremony, to drinks, dining and dancing — while still allowing guests to move easily between spaces. From a photography point of view, this makes a huge difference. It means moments happen naturally, and photographs can unfold without interruption.

Below is an overview of the main spaces and how they’re typically used on a wedding day.

We’re incredibly awkward with posing and Gary lived true to the promise of taking some beautiful photographs whilst making us feel natural and comfortable. We have countless, gorgeous photographs of our guests having fun, our wedding and vows and group shots after the wedding. Gary was so professional and INCREDIBLY kind to all our guests… we could not have been any happier choosing Gary as our photographer and we’d recommend him to anyone and everyone in a heartbeat.

The Cherry Suite – Getting Ready

The Cherry Suite is a calm, private space in Morden Hall where the day usually begins. Tucked away on the first floor, it’s hidden from arriving guests and gives you a chance to get ready in peace with your closest people.

The room is modern, light-filled and comfortable, with plenty of space for hair, makeup and those quieter moments before the ceremony. From a photography point of view, it’s an ideal setting for natural getting-ready photos that feel relaxed rather than staged.

The Sycamore Room – Getting Ready

The Sycamore Room is often used by the other partner for final preparations. With views across the Morden Hall gardens, it’s a quiet space to gather thoughts, practise speeches or take a moment before everything begins. It's not huge but there's enough space for jackets, mirrors and last-minute adjustments, and it works well for low-key, documentary-style photos without any fuss.

The Hawthorne Room – Drinks & Mingling

The Hawthorne Room is a really versatile space. You can use it as an overflow for getting ready - taking advantage of the lovely big windows and light for hair and makeup or you can use it for guests gather for a drink on arrival.

Overlooking Morden's North Lawn, it’s a lovely settling space that sets the tone for the day. Later on, guests often drift back here for a quieter moment away from the main celebrations. From a photography perspective, it’s a great room and I often use it for a few photos of the bridal party once they're ready just before the ceremony.

The Willow Room

The Willow – The Ceremony

The Willow Suite sits at the heart of Morden Hall and is the main ceremony space. Light-filled and elegant, it has a real sense of occasion without feeling formal or heavy. One of its standout features is the staircase entrance, which makes for a beautiful walk into the ceremony and is great for entrance photos. With space for up to 120 guests and views across the lawn and the River Wandle, it’s particularly well suited to larger ceremonies that still feel intimate.

The Mulberry Room – Wedding Breakfast

The Mulberry Room is where the wedding breakfast usually takes place at Morden Hall. With its high vaulted ceiling, sash windows and sculptural lighting, it has an immediate sense of occasion. It seats up to 150 guests and works equally well for dining and speeches. The light and proportions make it a strong space for both atmosphere and photography. I like it because it's light and there is plenty of space for me to move around easily.

Use: Wedding breakfast (can also host ceremonies)

Capacity: Up to 150 guests

Style: Grand but soft

The Mulberry / Willow – Evening Reception

As the day moves into the evening, the focus shifts back towards the main spaces for dancing and celebrations. The proximity to the bar and doors leading out onto the North Lawn make this part of the day flow easily between indoors and outdoors. There's plenty of space which is always helpful for me as the photographer.

The Oak Room – Quiet Retreat

The Oak Room is a smaller, flexible space on the ground floor. It’s often used as a quiet retreat for guests who want a break from the main celebration. Couples sometimes use it as a children’s room, a cosy lounge for older guests, or simply somewhere calm to step away for a few minutes.

The Gardens – Drinks, Ceremonies & Evenings Outdoors

Set within 125 acres of National Trust parkland, Morden Hall’s private gardens are exclusively yours and a photographer's dream. The North Lawn, river Wandle and old footbridge provide a beautiful backdrop for drinks, photos and relaxed moments throughout the day.

As evening arrives, the gardens often become the setting for food stalls, fire pits and outdoor celebrations, all managed by the on-site catering team. From a photography point of view, this is where Morden Hall really comes into its own — the light, space and movement allow photographs to feel completely natural.

Morden Hall FAQs

CAN WE USE CONFETTI?

Yes, but only outside. This is usually done on the patio outside the Willow Room, which works well for relaxed confetti photos. For tips on getting the best confetti shot, click here.

HOW LONG DOES THE CEREMONY LAST?

Most ceremonies last around 20–30 minutes, depending on how personalised they are. Because Morden Hall is exclusively yours for the day, there’s no rush afterwards, which makes the whole wedding feel calm and well paced — very different to a busy town hall ceremony.

DO WE NEED TO BRING OUR OWN WITNESSES?

Yes. It’s a legal requirement to bring two adult witnesses who can understand the ceremony. The venue team can’t act as witnesses. If you’re having a very small wedding, I’m happy to step in as a witness if needed.

IS PARKING AVAILABLE FOR GUESTS?

Yes. Guest parking is available nearby, and details are provided by the venue during planning. Wedding cars and suppliers can also be accommodated with advance notice.

CAN WE GET MARRIED AT MORDEN HALL IF WE LIVE IN ANOTHER BOROUGH?

Yes. You can get married at Morden Hall regardless of where you live. You’ll just need to give notice of marriage at your local register office.

WHO COUNTS TOWARDS THE ROOM CAPACITY?

Room capacities are fixed due to fire and safety regulations and can’t be exceeded. All guests must be seated during the ceremony. The couple, registrars, one photographer, and children under two are usually not included, but it’s always worth confirming exact numbers with the venue.

IS MORDEN HALL EXCLUSIVE ON OUR WEDDING DAY?

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of a Morden Hall wedding is that the house and gardens are exclusively yours for the day. There are no other weddings taking place, which gives both the celebration and the photography a relaxed, private feel.

CAN WE HAVE DRINKS AND FOOD ON SITE?

Yes. Morden Hall offers in-house catering for drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts and evening food. Keeping everything on site helps the day flow naturally and works especially well for relaxed, documentary-style wedding photography.

CAN WE PERSONALISE OUR CIVIL CEREMONY?

Yes. The legal wording must be included, but you’re encouraged to personalise your ceremony with readings, music and personal vows. Those personal touches always come through beautifully in both the ceremony and the photographs. Religious content isn’t permitted, as Morden Hall is a civil venue.

WHAT TIME SHOULD WE ARRIVE ON THE WEDDING DAY?

You’ll be given a confirmed arrival time in advance, but couples are usually asked to arrive around 30 minutes before the ceremony for final checks and interviews. Arriving a little early helps the day feel relaxed and gives time for a few calm moments before everything begins.

CAN WE BRING PETS TO THE WEDDING?

Yes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at Morden Hall, subject to prior arrangement and supervision. Dogs often make a lovely addition to wedding photos, especially in the gardens.

Morden Hall, The River Wandle And The Story Of The Area

Morden Hall sits within one of the most surprising pockets of South West London. Now surrounded by suburbia, the estate was once at the heart of a working industrial landscape centred around the River Wandle. For centuries, the fast-flowing river powered mills producing textiles, snuff and paper, and Morden Hall itself grew alongside that history as a country house rather than a civic building.

That background is still very present today. The river winds quietly through the grounds, old footbridges link different parts of the estate, and the surrounding parkland gives Morden Hall a distinctly rural feel. It’s one of the reasons weddings here feel so different to most London venues. Even on a busy day, the setting encourages calm, movement and space, which always shows in the photographs.

The area around Morden Hall has changed dramatically over time, but the estate has remained a constant. Now cared for by the National Trust, it feels protected from the pace of the city around it. From a photography point of view, that combination of history and nature is ideal. You can move from brick buildings to riverside paths to open lawns within a few minutes, allowing photography to feel varied without ever feeling rushed.

What makes weddings at Morden Hall particularly special is that sense of continuity. Couples are celebrating in a place that has evolved over hundreds of years, shaped by industry, landscape and community. When that story becomes part of your photography, the images feel grounded and timeless, rooted not just in how the day looked, but in where it happened.

Your Morden Hall Wedding Photographer

I focus on simple London weddings for couples who want natural, relaxed photos with no awkward posing. You want to enjoy your day and have fun with your guests without camera in your face. Of course you want beautiful photos but they should happen naturally. First and foremost this is your wedding day - it's not a photoshoot. I’m calm, unobtrusive, and always on hand to guide you when it’s genuinely helpful.

Choosing a photographer for your special day is never an easy task, often judging simply by pictures on websites. Having seen Gary's work and sharing it with my husband, we loved his natural approach to photography and reached out to speak with him directly. Gary is friendly, professional and has a great sense of humour. He put us at complete ease and we'd made the right decision. Particularly when my videographer cancelled 30 mins before she was meant to arrive, he assured me his photos would be all we needed, and he was right. Our guests were extremely complimentary about him as both a person and professional. We would recommend him to anyone and the pictures speak for themselves. Eternally grateful, thank you.
