Hackney Town Hall is just down the road from where I have lived for 20 years and I love it. It offers that distinctive mix of East London vibe and historic grandeur, making it a brilliant choice for couples who want stylish photos without it feeling traditional in the usual sense.
I’ve photographed loads of weddings at Hackney Town Hall and I’m always drawn to its strong Art Deco design and the relaxed way weddings are run here. This isn’t a town hall packed with back-to-back ceremonies, so you’re far less likely to feel rushed on the day. If you’re looking for an urban East London backdrop in your wedding photos, Hackney is ideal, with plenty of characterful streets and street art nearby.
Hackney Town Hall is a Grade II-listed building dating from the 1930s, and its Art Deco design is genuinely striking. The façade and wide front steps work perfectly for those classic “just married” moments — including confetti — and the building has a real sense of occasion without feeling overwhelming. Many town halls are grand but Hackney is really stand out. It's gorgeous inside. I don't know when they last refurbished it but it all looks pristine to me.
There's also something else you should know about getting married here - they don't over schedule weddings. Some town halls (I won't mention which) have a habit of scheduling more than one wedding at the same time which means everyone there's a feeling of pressure to keep moving quickly. I really don't like that. I think every couple has the right to enjoy the special moment on their wedding day without feeling rushed.
Inside, the space feels open and bright which is great for photos. There’s a large waiting area framed by a beautiful marble staircase, which works really well for wedding photography. When the registrars take you through for your pre-ceremony interview your guests will be shown into the ceremony room. Once the ceremony is finished, you and your partner will be invited to take a moment alone in one of the venue's ceremonial suites. This is a nice chance for you to have a private moment as a newly married couple before seeing all your guests. During this time, I'll gather your guests on the steps ready for your first exit as a couple and the confetti! There seven different ceremony spaces available so let's take a look at those now.
My whole approach to wedding photography is summed up in one line: beautiful photos for people who don’t like to pose. I focus on real moments as they unfold rather than staging or directing them, so you can enjoy your day fully — the people, the atmosphere, the small in-between moments — while I quietly observe and capture everything in a natural, honest way, without awkward posing or constant interruption.
I’m calm and unobtrusive, blending in more like a guest than a photographer, and I only step in when it’s genuinely helpful to offer a bit of gentle guidance. This is your wedding day, not a photoshoot — you’ll still get beautiful images, just without being told what to do every five minutes. My priority is that you and your guests feel relaxed and present, and that when you look back at your photos, they take you straight back to how the day really felt.
Gary was the perfect wedding photographer for us. From the moment we first spoke to him we knew we’d found the right fit and on the day he totally exceeded our expectations - as did the results. We are thrilled. He ensured the day was captured while letting us still enjoy each and every moment of it. He’s a total pro who is able to read people / the room. He anticipated our needs as he’s done this so many times but still made it feel special for us. Thank you, Gary

One of the biggest strengths of getting married at Hackney Town Hall is the range of ceremony spaces available. There are seven different rooms in total, which means couples can choose something that really fits the size and feel of their wedding, rather than adapting their plans to the room.
From simple, intimate ceremonies to larger, more theatrical spaces, each room has its own character. Some are light and modern, others are rich in Art Deco detail, but all sit comfortably within the building’s calm, well-organised flow on a wedding day.
Below is a closer look at each ceremony room, what it’s best suited for, and how it works in practice.
The Lanchester Suite and Lodge Suite are very similar in size, layout and overall feel, and are often considered interchangeable when couples are choosing a smaller ceremony space at Hackney Town Hall. The rooms are identical with the exception of the interior decor; the Lodge Suite features cream walls rather than green. Neither room is about grand architecture or decorative detail. Instead, they’re clean, practical and relaxed, which helps wedding ceremonies here feel relaxed and intimate.
The Lodge Suite is not currently available for marriages or civil partnerships. At this time, it is used exclusively for citizenship ceremonies.
Capacity: Up to around 30 guests
Style: Simple, modern and understated
Aisle: Limited
Pet-friendly: No
The Committee Room beautiful, traditional ceremony space with a polished parquet floor and rich wood penciling. There's a long aisle to walk down, which is especially nice if you want to be 'given away' at your ceremony - or just make an entrance! This is one of my favourite spaces to photograph - lovely colours and great light.
Capacity: 100
Style: Stylish. Traditional with a modern twist.
Aisle: Yes
Pet-friendly: No
The Council Chamber is the most impressive ceremony room at Hackney Town Hall with its rich wood panelling, high ceilings and gallery seating. It has a strong sense of history and feels properly ceremonial, while still fitting comfortably within Hackney’s relaxed East London character.
There’s lots of room here for a clear walk-in, which works well if one of you is being “given away” or if you want a more traditional entrance, and the size of the room means guests never feel cramped.
Capacity: Around 100 guests, with additional gallery seating
Style: Grand, historic and wood-panelled
Aisle: Yes
Pet-friendly: No
The North and South Atria are very similar in style and layout and are often considered together by couples choosing a larger, more modern ceremony space at Hackney Town Hall. Both are glass-roofed atriums designed to bring in plenty of natural light, giving ceremonies a bright, open feel that’s quite different from the more traditional rooms in the building. From a wedding photographer’s point of view, they are a joy to work in and I love the combination of the art decor of the building and these modern bright ceremony spaces.
Capacity: Suitable for larger ceremonies of up to 200
Style: Modern, light-filled and contemporary
Aisle: Yes
Pet-friendly: No
The Assembly Hall is the largest and most dramatic space at Hackney Town Hall and is designed for weddings that want to make a statement. With its grand Art Deco proportions, chandeliers and sweeping staircase, it feels closer to a ballroom than a traditional ceremony room and works particularly well for larger celebrations.
What’s useful to know is that the Assembly Hall can also be partitioned, creating a more contained space for smaller ceremonies while still keeping that sense of scale and style.
Capacity: Up to around 420 guests
Style: Grand Art Deco ballroom
Aisle: Yes
Pet-friendly: No
We are incredibly glad we booked Gary, and have ended up with not just a few, but a whole album of absolutely beautiful photos of us and our family and friends from the day! He put both ourselves and our guests at total ease with his manner on the day, and this is very evident in the wonderfully natural collection of photos that we now have to look back on. We would very much recommend Gary to anyone who is looking for a photographer to document their special day and are hoping to use him again when we come to plan our larger wedding celebration!

Yes. Many couples hold their ceremony in the Council Chamber or one of the Atria, then move to the Assembly Hall or another space for drinks, the reception, and the party.
No. Civil ceremonies at Hackney Town Hall must be non-religious. This means no religious wording, readings from sacred texts, hymns, or traditional church vows.
Yes. Confetti is allowed on the outside steps only and must be biodegradable. Confetti isn’t permitted inside the building. Check my confetti page for more tips.
Yes. Hackney Town Hall is fully wheelchair accessible, with lifts and accessible toilets throughout the building. There are also disabled access bays nearby for Blue Badge holders.
Generally, dogs are not permitted at Hackney Town Hall. Registered assistance dogs are welcome.
Yes. Larger rooms naturally offer a longer aisle, but even the smaller ceremony rooms at Hackney Town Hall allow for a short walk-in if that’s important to you.
There is no on-site parking or vehicle access. However, your ceremony booking entitles you to apply for parking permits for up to two vehicles on the day. Routemaster buses are permitted but must wait on Reading Lane, to the side of the town hall, and cannot stop directly outside the entrance.
Usually, yes. Hackney Town Hall can arrange separate interviews so you don’t see each other before the ceremony, which works well if you’re planning a first-look moment. This isn’t available for all ceremony types and may involve an additional fee.
I recommend arriving around 30 minutes before your ceremony. This allows time for registrar interviews. If you’re being interviewed separately, one of you can arrive around 30 minutes before and the other about 15 minutes before the ceremony. Guests should arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time, though 30 minutes is ideal. There’s a comfortable waiting area where everyone can gather before the ceremony begins.
One of the big advantages of getting married at Hackney Town Hall is how much choice you have nearby when it comes to food, drinks and celebrations afterwards. Hackney has a very different feel to central London town halls — it’s creative, relaxed and full of venues that are used to hosting weddings without making them feel formal or over-produced.
You should definitely have The Hackney on your hit list for wedding reception venues. This place is a well oiled machine hosting weddings day in, day out. I have photographed many weddings there and it really works well.
Just a short walk away, London Fields can work for photos but the walk from the town hall isn't the nicest. Around the park, you’ll find plenty of relaxed pubs and bars that work well for informal wedding receptions or drinks.
The Cat & Mutton is a long-time favourite for Hackney weddings. It’s spacious, friendly and used to large groups, making it a good option for a lively reception without feeling stiff. Nearby, The Star by Hackney Downs offers a slightly calmer feel, with private hire options and a nice balance between pub atmosphere and something a bit more special.
For couples looking for something more food-focused Lardo is a popular choice, known for its relaxed Italian food and warm, neighbourhood feel that works really well for weddings. I always enjoy photographing there - it's relaxed with a family style vibe and close to the Town Hall. Another great treat for foodies is Trullo just down the road in Islington. This is a really special place and one of my favourite wedding reception venues with a large private room downstairs.
If you’d like to keep things local and support independent East London businesses, Hackney has no shortage of creative suppliers who really suit the feel of weddings at Hackney Town Hall. The area attracts designers and makers with a strong sense of style, which works perfectly for couples planning a relaxed, modern wedding.
For bridalwear, Heart Aflutter Bridal is a lovely independent boutique known for contemporary, bohemian dresses and for grooms, Joshua Kane is well worth a look.
Flowers always photograph well and floristry is another area where Hackney really shines. Grace & Thorn is just around the corner and is known for bold, contemporary arrangements with a distinctive East London edge. Flower Warehouse is another popular choice, offering seasonal blooms and a friendly, straightforward approach that many couples appreciate.
If you're looking for somewhere close for the pre-wedding preparations the night before your big day, the Town Hall Hotel in Hackney is a great choice. Not to be confused with the Town Hall ceremony venue, this plush hotel has all the grandeur and sense of occasion you'll be wanting to start your day. There are some great spaces here for photos once the wedding party is ready, before tanking the short walk to the Town Hall for the ceremony.
Getting married in Hackney means you’re surrounded by creative, independent businesses and a strong local community, which gives weddings here a very distinctive feel. I’ve spent plenty of time photographing weddings at Hackney Town Hall and working around the surrounding streets, so if you want to pick my brains, just ask — I’m always happy to help.
We recently had the pleasure of having Gary photograph our wedding, and we couldn't be happier with the experience from start to finish. Gary is not just an incredible photographer; his wealth of experience in weddings proved invaluable in helping us navigate and plan out the key elements of our big day. He offered insightful advice and guidance that went far beyond just photography, truly allowing us to feel prepared and confident.
On the wedding day itself, Gary's energy and enthusiasm were remarkable. He had an incredible ability to put everyone at ease, from us as the couple to all our guests. This relaxed atmosphere allowed him to capture the most beautiful, candid, and authentic photos of our special day. We wholeheartedly recommend Gary to anyone looking for a photographer who captures incredible memories and makes the entire process enjoyable and stress-free.

I focus on simple London weddings for couples who want natural, relaxed photos with no awkward posing. You want to enjoy your day and have fun with your guests without camera in your face. Of course you want beautiful photos but they should happen naturally. First and foremost this is your wedding day - it's not a photoshoot. I’m calm, unobtrusive, and always on hand to guide you when it’s genuinely helpful.
