A Small, Joyful Wedding at Islington Town Hall

Jen and Richard’s wedding was everything you’d hope for from a small, family-centred day—intimate, relaxed and full of feeling. Just 18 guests, all family, gathered at Room 99 in Islington Town Hall, one of my favourite spots for a London ceremony. It’s bright, elegant and never feels too big, even with a small group. There was no bridal party, no first look—just the two of them arriving together, ready to get married. Actually, one thing I loved it that they arrived early so they could great their guests as they arrived which is a nice touch.

As a documentary wedding photographer at Islington Town Hall, I’ve seen all sorts of weddings here, but this one stood out for its warmth. No drama, no fuss—just a couple completely focused on the people closest to them. The atmosphere in the room said it all. Emotional but calm, traditional but totally personal. Jen looked incredible (I've just had a weekend in Euro Disney so I couldn't help but compare her to a Disney Princess)—she’d worried about being too dressed up for a town hall wedding, but she couldn’t have judged it better.

Photos on the Move

After the ceremony we stepped outside for a few natural group shots. The kids were brilliant—full of energy and personality—and we managed to sneak in some playful photos before heading off. Jen and Richard had planned a walk over to one of their favourite spots, The Draper’s Arms, just a short distance away. It’s a place I know well, and it made a brilliant backdrop for a few portraits along the way.

This part of the day is always a highlight. No awkward posing, no pressure—just a walk through familiar streets with people you love. It’s where some of the best natural wedding photography happens. As a documentary wedding photographer at The Draper’s Arms, and across Islington, I aim to create beautiful photos for people who don’t want to pose. Jen and Richard were exactly that—laid back, present, and totally themselves. It made the whole day a joy to photograph.
