When you're planning your wedding photography, you might wonder whether you need a second photographer, often called a second shooter. Some photographers insist on always having one, while others (like me) prefer to work solo and capture everything you need. So, do you need a second photographer? Let’s look at the pros and cons.
The Pros of Having a Second Photographer
There are a few situations where a second photographer can be useful:
Covering Two Locations at Once – The most obvious reason for having a second photographer is if both partners are getting ready in different locations at the same time. Since I can’t be in two places at once, a second shooter could capture one while I photograph the other.
More Angles of Key Moments – Moments like the first kiss, confetti throw, or first dance could, in theory, be captured from two perspectives. But in reality, I’ve never felt that I’ve missed anything by working alone.
Faster Coverage of Large Weddings – If you have a huge guest list (200+ people), an extra photographer might help cover more guests, particularly during cocktail hour or candid moments. There is a lot going on and a second photographer here can be very useful.
The Cons of Having a Second Photographer
Despite the potential benefits, hiring a second photographer isn’t always necessary:
You Might Not Need Two Angles – I move around a lot to capture different perspectives naturally, so a second shooter often just duplicates what I’m already getting.
More Cameras, More Distraction – A second photographer means more people moving around and potentially getting in the way of your guests. Your wedding should feel like a celebration, not a film set. Too many professionals—photographers, videographers, and their assistants—can turn it into a production, making you overly aware of cameras and disrupting natural moments. A skilled photographer works discreetly, capturing real emotions without making the day feel staged. Keeping things simple ensures a relaxed, authentic, and enjoyable wedding experience. That's the vibe I like.
Extra Cost – A second shooter is an extra expense, and in most cases, the additional images don’t add much to your final collection. And let's be honest, most second photographers are aspiring wedding photographers gaining experience by working alongside a pro. While they are competent, they’re usually booked closer to the wedding date, meaning you won’t know exactly who will be photographing your day.
Consistency in Style - One of the most important things to consider when choosing a wedding photographer is finding someone whose style you love—someone who captures moments in a way that reflects how you want to remember your day. Every photographer has a unique way of seeing and documenting a wedding, from the way they use light to how they edit their final images. When you hire a second photographer, their style will naturally be a bit different from the lead photographer’s (that's me!). Even if they try to match the main photographer’s approach, subtle differences in composition, lighting, and editing can lead to a lack of consistency in your final gallery. Instead of one beautifully cohesive story, you may end up with images that feel slightly mismatched.
What I Recommend Instead
While I rarely work with a second shooter, I do sometimes bring an assistant to help with the logistics of the day. An assistant isn’t there to take photos, but they’re invaluable for:
- Helping gather family for group portraits.
- Assisting with creative flash shots.
- Carrying gear and setting up lighting.
It doesn’t affect the quality of your images, but it does mean I can work more efficiently—and I don’t go home with a bad back from carrying a heavy backpack all day!
So, Do You Need a Second Photographer?
For most weddings, the answer is no—a single experienced photographer is more than capable of covering everything. However, if you’d feel more comfortable having a second photographer, I’m always happy to arrange one for you. It'll certainly make my life easier having another pair of hands!
