Chelsea Old Town Hall is one of London’s most elegant places to get married and has long been a favourite for couples planning a stylish, understated wedding. Set right on the King’s Road, it combines a strong sense of history with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that works particularly well on a wedding day. As a Chelsea wedding photographer who regularly photographs ceremonies here, I’m always struck by how elegant it is — I often think of it as a little jewellery box — and how calm it feels, even on a busy weekend.
Kensington and Chelsea offer a very distinct London backdrop. The area feels refined without being formal, and the surrounding streets are ideal for wedding photography. Flood Street, just around the corner, is lovely for quieter photos, and it’s only a short walk to Albert Bridge if you’d like something a bit more iconic. Chelsea Old Town Hall suits couples who want their wedding photography to feel timeless, without turning the day into something overly grand or showy.
Getting married at Chelsea Old Town Hall feels elegant and personal rather than formal. The building has a strong sense of occasion but remains compact and refined, which helps couples and guests relax into the day.
There are several spots that work beautifully for wedding photography, including the rose-covered waiting area and the elegant staircase, both of which provide clean, timeless backdrops. After the ceremony, confetti on the front steps is followed by group photos before heading onto the King’s Road for drinks or a reception. With everything close by, Chelsea Old Town Hall works well for couples who want their wedding to feel easy, stylish and well-paced.
My whole approach to wedding photography is summed up in one line: beautiful photos for people who don’t like to pose. I focus on real moments as they unfold naturally rather than staging or directing them, so you can enjoy your day fully — the people, the atmosphere, the small in-between moments — while I quietly observe and capture everything in a natural, honest way, without awkward posing or constant interruption.
I’m calm and unobtrusive, blending in more like a guest than a photographer, and I only step in when it’s genuinely helpful to offer a bit of gentle guidance. This is your wedding day, not a photoshoot — you’ll still get beautiful images, but without being guided every step of the way. My priority is that you and your guests feel relaxed and present, and that when you look back at your photos, they bring you straight back to the feeling of the day.
"From the first call Gary was professional and listened to us. He made some fantastic suggestions which ended up being our favourite photos! On the wedding day Gary was amazing, his calm, friendly and fun presence made the whole experience enjoyable (coming from someone who hates having photos done), and the photos are absolutely fabulous. Hiring Gary was the best decision and investment we could have made."

There are only three ceremony rooms at Chelsea Old Town Hal, which I love because unlike some of the larger town halls, Chelsea is never crowded. You don't feel like you're on a production line at Chelsea and I think being less hurried makes for better wedding photos.
Let's take a closer look at those three ceremony rooms, what each one is best suited for, and how they work on a wedding day.
The Harrington Room is the smallest ceremony space at Chelsea Old Town Hall and is designed for very intimate weddings. It’s often chosen by couples who want a simple, meaningful ceremony with just their closest people present. The atmosphere is calm and contained, which suits weddings where the focus is purely on the moment rather than the setting. There isn’t a formal aisle but we can still get lovely photos in here.
Capacity: Up to 8 guests
Style: Simple, elegant and understated
Availability: Only available on weekday mornings.
Aisle: No formal aisle
Dog-friendly: Yes
The Rossetti Room is the most popular room at Chelsea Old Town Hall and a lovely option for small weddings, sitting neatly between the very intimate Harrington Room and the larger ceremony spaces. It photographs well and is ideal for couples who want a calm, elegant setting with a handful of guests, without the room feeling too tight.
From a wedding photographer’s point of view, the Rossetti Room works particularly well because of the light. It has a soft, flattering quality that suits natural, relaxed photography and keeps the focus firmly on people rather than décor.
Capacity: Up to 12 guests
Style: Light, elegant and understated
Aisle: Yes, but short.
Dog-friendly: Yes

The Brydon Room is the largest ceremony room at Chelsea Old Town Hall and is well suited to couples planning a Chelsea wedding with a slightly larger guest list. It has an understated feel that works well for wedding photography, with good natural light and a calm atmosphere that never feels overblown.
The layout allows for a proper walk-in, which suits couples who want a more traditional entrance. From a photography point of view, it’s easy to work in and produces clean, natural wedding photographs that reflect the relaxed Chelsea setting.
Capacity: Up to 38 guests
Style: Bright, elegant and refined
Aisle: Yes – plenty of space for a clear aisle between the rows
Dog-friendly: Yes

"We cannot thank you enough for providing incredible photos that we will cherish forever. You brought such a calm and professional attitude to our special day. You were fantastic with our guests, they all commented on how amazing you were. Would highly recommend Gary. Neither of us love having our photos taken, yet the photos are so natural and it's hard to pick favourites! The process before our day was easy, Gary worked around our busy schedules. Once again thank you Gary, you are amazing, you played a big part on the best day of our life!"

Civil ceremonies at Chelsea Old Town Hall must be non-religious. That means no religious wording, readings from sacred texts, hymns, or traditional church vows. This applies to all Chelsea weddings held here.
Usually, yes. You can often request separate interviews so you arrive and enter the ceremony room independently, which works well if you’re planning a first look. This isn’t available for every ceremony type, so confirm it when booking. It does take a bit of coordination on the day, which I’m very used to helping with.
I recommend arriving around 30 minutes before your Chelsea Old Town Hall ceremony. This allows time for registrar interviews. If you’re being interviewed separately, one of you can arrive around 30 minutes early and the other about 15 minutes before the ceremony. Guests should arrive in good time too — the waiting area has a lovely atmosphere and it’s often possible to take a few relaxed photos before things begin.
Yes. It’s a legal requirement to bring two adult witnesses to your Chelsea wedding ceremony. They must be able to understand what’s taking place. The registration team can’t act as witnesses but if needed, I’m happy to act as one of your witnesses while still photographing the ceremony.
Yes, confetti is allowed outside Chelsea Old Town Hall only and must be biodegradable. Confetti isn’t permitted inside the building. I don’t recommend dried flower petals — they sound nice but end up everywhere and aren’t great for wedding photography. Read my confetti tips here.
Yes. Chelsea Old Town Hall allows one well-behaved dog at your wedding ceremony. Your dog must be kept on a lead and under control. Fair warning though — dogs do tend to steal the spotlight in wedding photos.
In some rooms, yes. The Brydon Room works best for a traditional entrance. The Rossetti Room is smaller but can still work. The Harrington Room is very compact and doesn’t allow for an aisle as such.
Stepping out of Chelsea Old Town Hall, you’re straight onto the King’s Road, one of London’s most iconic streets and a brilliant place to continue your wedding celebrations after the family photos. Lined with elegant restaurants, pubs and cafés, it works equally well for a relaxed daytime gathering or a stylish evening reception.
I always think it's a good idea for everyone to meet in a local pub rather than at the Town Hall - if any guests are early they can relax with a drink and use the loo. A popular pre-ceremony meet-up spot is The Pig's Ear, just a short walk away. It’s stylish, usually calm during the day, and has lovely natural light, which makes it a good option for relaxed pre-wedding photos. It’s worth checking there isn’t a local event on, as it can get busier later in the day. Right across the street from the town hall is The Trafalgar Pub which is another favourite meeting spot.
For something atmospheric and intimate, The Ivy Chelsea Garden is around a ten-minute walk away and works beautifully for post-ceremony dining. The garden is particularly lovely in spring and summer, and the interiors always photograph well. Right next door, Bluebird Chelsea offers larger private dining spaces and a more contemporary feel, which suits bigger groups or more formal celebrations. Morano in Mayfair isn't too far away and has a lovely private dining room.
If you’re after something more relaxed, The Phene is one of my favourites. It’s a stylish but cosy gastropub with private rooms (where I can photograph freely), a terrace and a friendly, informal atmosphere that works very well for smaller wedding receptions. Another great nearby option is Stanley’s, tucked just off the main road, with a hidden garden courtyard and a modern British menu.
For those happy to hop in a cab or take a longer walk, The Cadogan Arms is a beautifully renovated pub with elegant interiors and excellent food — a great choice for a classic London reception with a bit of character.
Chelsea is well connected, which makes planning a wedding here straightforward for guests. Sloane Square Underground Station is around a ten-minute walk away and is served by the District and Circle lines. Several bus routes also run along the King’s Road, and there’s nearby parking for those arriving by car.
If you’re arriving in a wedding car, there’s space for drop-off directly outside the Town Hall. Dovehouse Street, just around the corner, is a useful spot for drivers to wait during the ceremony and photos.
Gary was absolutely fab, and the photos he took really speak for themselves. My husband and I wanted a day that was both casual and fun, but also had a touch of 'big white wedding', and safe to say Gary's work absolutely smashed it. The photos really capture the relaxed and celebratory vibe of our day, and our guests have loved the results. In the run up to the day Gary couldn't have been more helpful and communicative, which was so reassuring, while on the day his support, energy and professionalism was unmatched. Truly can't recommend Gary enough, an absolute joy to work with (speaking as someone who is also an events professional!).

If you’re getting married at Chelsea Old Town Hall, sourcing your wedding essentials locally can make the whole experience feel more personal — and much more convenient. Kensington and Chelsea are full of established boutiques and creative businesses that know the area and the venues well.
For bridalwear, Suzanne Neville is a long-standing favourite, known for elegant, beautifully tailored gowns. I love Needle and Thread which has some terrific wedding dress designs, reasonably priced and they are on the Kings Cross, so you couldn't be more local! For something more fashion-forward there's The Wedding Club. Grooms are well catered for too, with Richard James and Oliver Brown.
Floristry is another Chelsea strong point. Flower Stand Chelsea is a reliable local favourite, while Moyses Stevens is ideal if you’re after something more dramatic and luxurious. For a more boutique, natural style, Amanda Austin Flowers creates arrangements that photograph beautifully and suit everything from modern to romantic settings.
Getting married in Kensington & Chelsea means you’re surrounded by experienced local suppliers who know the area inside out. Whether you’re looking for a last-minute bouquet, advice on nearby photo spots, or a great place for post-wedding drinks, I’m always happy to help. I’ve worked in and around the borough for years, so if you need a recommendation — or just don’t know where to start — feel free to ask.
Chelsea Old Town Hall sits on the King’s Road, a street that has long been associated with style, influence and cultural change. Originally a private road used by King Charles II to travel between Whitehall and Kew, the King’s Road gradually opened up and became one of London’s most recognisable and most photographed streets. Over time, Chelsea developed a reputation for creativity and elegance, attracting artists, writers and designers alongside long-established residents.
Chelsea Old Town Hall itself dates back to the late nineteenth century and was built to serve a growing and confident borough. Its architecture reflects civic pride rather than excess, which is part of why it works so well for weddings today. The building feels refined and balanced, with a sense of occasion that never tips into anything showy. That quality carries through into wedding photography, where the focus stays firmly on people rather than spectacle. I can't tell you how much a love this building - it's grand but welcoming and just photographs so well.
The surrounding area plays a big role in how weddings feel here. From the quieter residential streets just off the King’s Road to nearby spots like Flood Street and Albert Bridge, there’s a variety of settings within a short walk. From a wedding photographer’s point of view, that mix of elegance, light and space gives Chelsea weddings a timeless feel without needing to travel far from the ceremony.
For couples choosing to get married at Chelsea Old Town Hall, the appeal often lies in that combination of history and ease. It’s a place rooted in London’s past, set within a neighbourhood that still feels stylish, lived-in and quietly confident — qualities that translate naturally into relaxed, beautiful wedding photographs.
"We’re so grateful to have had Gary as our wedding photographer. He brought such a calm, reassuring energy to the day from the moment he arrived. He was warm, professional, and just lovely to have around — capturing everything so naturally, without it ever feeling staged. The photos are absolutely beautiful. He caught all the big, emotional moments and the little in-between ones we might have missed — and looking through them brought the whole day back to life. We’ve shared them endlessly with family and friends who all agree: he’s incredibly talented. The turnaround was also amazingly quick, which was such a lovely surprise — we didn’t expect to relive the day so soon, and in such stunning detail. Thank you, Gary — for capturing it all so beautifully."

I focus on simple London weddings for couples who want natural, relaxed photos with no awkward posing. You want to enjoy your day and have fun with your guests without camera in your face. Of course you want beautiful photos but they should happen naturally. First and foremost this is your wedding day - it's not a photoshoot. I’m calm, unobtrusive, and always on hand to guide you when it’s genuinely helpful.
Neither of us are comfortable having our photos taken but Gary made the whole experience feel easy and enjoyable. He was calm, supportive and fun to be around which really helped us relax. The photos he captured are absolutely amazing . We couldn’t be happier with them. We even received some images within a couple of hours and the full gallery arrived the very next day in a professional email. We would highly recommend Gary to anyone !
