These are my ten favourite photos I’ve taken this year that weren’t at weddings.
I absolutely love photographing weddings. A big part of the appeal is the challenge of creating beautiful photos that my couples will treasure for a lifetime, often in pretty demanding circumstances. On a wedding day I’m usually helping keep things running on time, keeping everyone relaxed and happy (especially my couple), working around chaos, bad light, rain, and sometimes three other wedding parties all trying to use the same spot at once. I can be stressful but (oddly) I genuinely enjoy all of that.
But it’s also a real treat to step into a more controlled, slower environment when I’m shooting environmental portraits. At the moment I’ve got two projects running. One is photographing London restaurateurs, and the other is called At Home, where I photograph interesting people in their own homes.
These shoots are much more considered. There’s time to try things out, to slow down, to talk, and to connect properly with the person in front of the camera. It’s a very different way of working, and I love it for different reasons.
I hope you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed making them.
